On Thursday 12 January 2017 the Gert Sibande region had their regional prize giving based on the 2016 matric exam, hosted by Nederland Park Combined School in Ermelo. Piet Retief High School did extremely well.
Three of the 2016 HPR matriculants were invited to the prize giving. Naushad Valli, Naheeda Ebrahim and Mu’aaz Badat. Mu’aaz was appointed as the top achiever in Mathematical Literacy in Gert Sibande. Naheeda won the price for the best learner in Life Sciences. The star of the event was Naushad Valli. He was called to the stage no less than 7 times and received the following awards: One of the Top five achievers in Mathematics with price money of R10 000, one of the Top five achievers in Physical Science with prize money of another R10 000. Top Achiever in Mkhondo Municipality; One of the Top Ten Achievers in Gert Sibande Municipality; and then finally the best matriculant in Gert Sibande in 2016. This was the second year running that Piet Retief High School has the privilege of one of our learners receiving this prestigious award.
One of the teachers of Piet Retief High School , namely Mrs. Wilma Odendaal also received an award as the teacher with the best results in Mathematical Literacy. 78 learners wrote Mathematical Literacy in 2016, 100% pass, 89, 7% of the learners got above 50% and there were 15 learners who had distinctions. Mu’aaz Badat was the only learner in Gert Sibande achieving more than 90%.
